U.S. election could influence transportation bill timeline

The November 3, 2026, midterm election determined control of the U.S. Congress for 2027. For transportation, the election results affect the timing of and leadership behind the next surface transportation bill.

The proposed BUILD America 250 Act has bipartisan origins and passed the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee 62-2, but has not advanced beyond the committee. The committee's ranking Democrat was re-elected and is now positioned to become chair.

Current programs have already been extended through December 11, giving the current Congress additional time to act on a longer-term reauthorization and creating a near-term decision point for funding of transportation infrastructure. Another extension into the new Congress is possible.
