Automobile Part Tariffs Now in Effect

On May 1, 2025, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) posted updated guidance on the 25 percent duty on imports of certain automobile parts from all countries effective May 3, 2025 in CSMS # 64916652.  The tariffs apply to imported parts of passenger vehicles under subdivision (g) or if they meet the criteria in subdivision (h).  See the Automobile Parts HTS List here.  The applicable headings for entry filing are noted below:

  • 9903.94.05: Applies to parts of passenger vehicles (sedans, sports utility vehicles, crossover utility vehicles, mini vans, and cargo vans) and light trucks classifiable in provisions of the HTSUS enumerated in subdivision (g).
    • 25 percent duty applies, in addition to any duty under an applicable free trade agreement or preference program.
  • 9903.94.06: Applies to all entries of articles classifiable under HTSUS provisions listed in subdivision (g)
    • Zero additional duty percent applies for goods that are eligible for USMCA, automobile knock-down kits or parts compilations or that are not parts of passenger vehicles and light trucks.

Other requirements:

  • Foreign Trade Zone entries must be admitted under privileged foreign status. 
  • Drawback is not available. 
  • Chapter 98 is not exempt from these requirements.
